REPORT ON SESSION “POPULAR SCIENCE TALK ON ICE AGES AND SNOWBALL EARTH

A Popular Science Talk was held on 4th of May, 2023, by the IQAC of MDKG College, Dibrugarh. The program started at 12:30 pm at the Arts premises of the college at Room no. 1. Principal, Dr. Nibedita Phukan inaugurated the session to the invited resource person, Prof. Dilip Kumar Mukhopadhyay, who has retired from IIT Roorkee and is currently providing consultancy at OIL and ONGC.This program was graced by the Chief General Manager of Geology and Reservoir Department, OIL,Shri Trailukya Borgohain and Dr.Pranab Gogoi of Dibru College.Dibrugarh. After the felicitation with a gamusa and token presentation of MDKG memento to the resource person the event was taken over by him.
The renowned scientist and resource person, Prof. Dilip Kumar Mukhopadhyay began with the series of Ice Age movies made by Hollywood, to draw interest and attention of the audience, which was a blend of teachers, non-teaching staff and students. He enlightened on the scientific reasons of earth’s history, when it resembled just like a mass of a snowball. There were five distinctive Ice Ages throughout the history of earth, identified by the scientists, in which it determines a long period of reduction in the temperature of Earth’s surface and atmosphere. Within the Ice Age two periods were distinguished–glacial and interglacial period–which determined the cold and warm temperatures alternately. A noteworthy fact related to global warming is the constant release of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere which declines the process of Ice Age in future. The solution to this burning problem is to generate large amounts of oxygen in the atmosphere such that Ice Age is not delayed.
This phenomenon has been explained by the resource person in the form of a graphical representation of Ice Age period and Greenhouse period. Briefly, he also spoke about the history of formation of earth with its atmosphere as very hot and toxic. Gradually, with the increase of oxygen levels life began to exist with microorganisms, invertebrates, vertebrates, dinosaurs, extinct species and long after–homo sapiens.
After an interaction with students the renowned scientist concluded with the question of whether earth was completely frozen or the equatorial region was left unaffected as there was still a lack of evidence and studies are going on related to this concept of Slush Earth hypothesis. The event successfully ended with a vote of thanks by the IQAC coordinator, Dr. Utpal Sut at 2 p.m
